Student grows through church ministry

Once a week, senior Jenny Marshall takes time out of her busy schedule for something she loves: Young Life. Young Life is a ministry that strives to bring teens to Christ in a teen-friendly environment. RHS students are encouraged to attend.

“Nothing is forced,” Marshall said. “It’s about fellowshipping with other people who know Christ. We like to have fun.”

Young Life meets on Monday’s at 7:27 at Amarillo Athlete, and Randall, Tascosa and Amarillo High each have a club. Randall Young Life and Amarillo High Young Life are combined, while Tascosa has its own sector.  Marshall said she started going to Young Life in February of 2012, and hasn’t missed a single meeting since then.

“My best friend Bailey Allen goes to Tascosa, which is where Young Life started in Amarillo,” Marshall said. “She was really involved, so I went with her once Young Life was open to Randall students.”

Marshall said the meetings start out with people hanging out and playing games, which then evolves into a group ‘mixer’ as well as personal challenges. After that, the group sings current music hits from popular artists such as Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber before moving on to worship and a short message. Marshall said she enjoys the relationships she gained from Young Life.

“[The best part of Young Life is] the people and the environment,” Marshall said. “It’s so fun and welcoming, and so are the people.”

In addition to meeting every Monday, Marshall said students at Young Life also participate in activities such as Mr. Christmas Tree pageant, Tacky Prom, a BBQ tour and a camp in June. For Marshall, the experience of being involved with something that made a difference is what draws her back to Young Life.

“Young Life has impacted me so much,” Marshall said. “I’ve made new friends and it inspires me to grow in my relationship with Christ.”
