Randall constitution amendment fails

Sophomore Jake Earls’ campaign to ammend Randall’s constitution and allow juniors to run for student body president failed last week.

Upon discovering that only seniors are allowed to run for student body president, Earls was eager to change the rule. Earls consulted Darby Noman about his pursual and was given two choices to achieve his goal:persuade Mr. Williams or attempt to pass an amendment. Earls chose to pass an amendment and present the idea to the council to be voted on. The amendment passed and was then presented to the student body to be voted on.

“Jake never expressed to me that he for sure was planning to run for student body president,” Norman said. “he just felt that a junior should be allowed to run for that office if he or she desired to do so.”

When presented to the student body two thirds of the votes were in favor of the amendment failing. Because the amendment failed the constitution expressed no  change.

“I admire students on both sides of this issue for their passion and involvement in this process,” Norman said. “I think this entire issue provides a great real life lesson for our students in how to deal with a controversial issue by gathering the facts, discarding untruths, deciding what your opinion is on the issue using social mores and personal beliefs to guide you in the decision making process, campaigning for one side or another of the issue if you feel passionately enough to do so, and finally exercising your right to let your voice be heard by voting.”
