Potential military members form group

Several students formed a mock ROTC program for people that are interested in being in the military.

Sophomores Ricky Gibbson and Reese Cryer  started an organization that currently has eight members. They do drill and PT (physical training) and may eventually start an honor guard, or silent guard.

“We don’t have any sponsors from ROTC, but we would like to,” Gibbson said. “My goal is to make it big enough for it to turn into an actual ROTC. Hopefully we’ll be able to present the colors at the pep rallies.”

The group posted posters in the hallways to encourage students to come to their meetings. They meet every Wednesday from 4 to 5 in Mr. Sheet’s woodshop room. Gibbson said they would like to have a full platoon, which is around forty people.

“My advice to people who want to join, just come in with a good attitude,” Gibbson said. “Don’t come in thinking ‘I’m gonna run this thing.’ It’s like an actual military. (Every meeting) we start off with footwork, like marching. Then we take a run. After the run we come back and do a little bit of PT and then we go back to marching.”
