Teens turn to hand sanitizer for intoxication, health experts worried

According to the Los Angeles Times, they have had six teens show up to hospitals in March and April with alcohol poisoning through drinking hand sanitizer.

Hand sanitizer is seen everywhere like classrooms, at home and at work and is there to help people to be healthier by virtually killing 100% of germs on the hands. This, what is meant to be safe substance could be the center of a dangerous and troubling trend within teenagers. Hand sanitizer contains up to 62 percent of ethyl alcohol in which some teens are using things such as salt to separate the alcohol from the gel itself, creating a powerful drink equating a shot of hard liquor.

Like the recent trends seen in teens such as the “cinnamon challenge,” health experts are worried these few cases are only the beginning of a dangerous trend within teens. Parents are being told to notify their children of the dangers of this movement and are recommended to purchase the foam type of hand sanitizer as it is harder to distillate than the common gel brand.
