Survival Guide for Freshman

It’s your first day at Randall High. You’re roaming the halls, frantically trying to find your first class. You have four minutes left. You look down at your schedule to double check the room number and…oh no! The schedule says 201 east, not west. So, you run towards the other building and slide into your desk just as the bell rings.

We’ve all been there. Freshman year; it’s one of the best and worst years of your life. You went from being at the top of the food chain in junior high to the very bottom in high school. It’s a big adjustment for everyone. To guarantee the best possible freshman year, here are some helpful tips.

The first and most important tip is to not procrastinate. I know you’ve all heard this one a thousand times, but it’s so important. If you have a ton of homework to do, don’t get overwhelmed, just prioritize. If you have an English essay due in three days and a math assignment due tomorrow, work on the math paper first and then focus on the English paper with what time you have left. Also, if you have multiple long term assignments, do a little bit each day, and by the time the due date rolls around, you’ll have nothing to worry about!

The next tip is to select your friends carefully and beware of cliques. As much as everyone wants to believe that cliques don’t exist, they do. The best way to avoid getting caught up in cliques is to make friends with people from various groups. If you have a wide variety of friends, you’re less likely to be involved in unnecessary drama.

The third and final tip is to get involved. Whether it’s sports, theater, or student council, pick one or two extracurricular activities that you enjoy. Going to football games or a school play are other ways you can be involved in school activities.  Getting involved makes your high school experience 100% better.

Overall, enjoy your freshman year, because it will pass in the blink of an eye. How you decide to spend it will affect the rest of your high school years, so keep your grades up, maintain a close circle of friends you can trust and buckle up for the fleeting four year journey that is high school.
