Amarillo Museum of Art to host ‘green’ exhibit

The Amarillo Museum of Art is opening a new show with a twist this Friday, the AmoA Alliance Recycle Art Festival. This show will have works of 60 different artists from eight different states and will be open until April 8.

The art being displayed has been constructed with recycled materials. Things that would otherwise be considered trash have been repurposed into works of art. The first showing opens Friday with a reception at 6:30. The showcase will continue Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with personal vendors and a place for shredding personal papers to emphasize their cause.

This will be the third year for this showcase to take place the idea was borrowed from Kay Kennedy, the museums director of development, when she came across a show similar in Santa Fe, NM.  The idea is a smart way to develop an understanding and appreciation for recycling while also entertaining the public.

The concept of using the recycled materials is a way for the public view everyday objects in a new light with different shapes, colors, and added textures is not new but growing in popularity. Things such as fried computer motherboards, water bottles, scrap metal, and coke cans creates new and exciting works of art. Repurposing the materials into artworks keeps these objects out of landfills and eliminates the cost of traditional recycling.

The exhibit will be located at AMoA, 2200 S. Van Buren St. the cost for the reception is $25 and the showing is free to the public.
