‘Mean Girls’ and ‘Spongebob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical’ earn most Tony Nominations

‘The Tony Awards will be held on June 10 and hosted by Josh Groban and Sara Bareilles.The awards honor excellence in live Broadway theatre. The nominees were announced on May 2.

The nominees for Best Musical are “The Band’s Visit,” “Mean Girls,” “Frozen,” and “Spongebob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical.”

“The Band’s Visit” is about a group of Egyptian musicians that are sent to an Israeli town by mistake. The musical includes the songs “Answer me” and “The Beat of Your Heart.”

“Mean Girls” is based on the movie of the same name. It includes the same characters such as Cady Heron, Janis Ian and Regina George. “A Cautionary Tale,” and “Meet the Plastics” are two songs from the musical. The musical is nominated for 12 Tony Awards.

“Frozen” is based on the 2013 movie. It follows sisters Elsa and Anna and the obstacles they face and overcome. The musical contains most of the same songs as long as new ones, such as, “Monster” and “What Do You Know About Love?”

“Spongebob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical is based on the Nickelodeon Television Series, “Spongebob SquarePants. The musical includes original songs by Sara Bareilles, John Legend, and Cyndi Lauper along with many other artists. “Spongebob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical” is tied with “Mean Girls” for most nominations.
