From screen to stage: Frozen heads to Broadway

Frozen premiered in 2013, and now the stage adaptation will be heading to Broadway in Feb. 2018. Currently, the musical is playing at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, and the run will end Oct. 1.

The plot of the musical is the same as the movie. Elsa, who has the power to create ice and snow, keeps herself secluded after accidently striking her sister in the head, almost killing her. After Elsa and Anna’s parents pass away, and Elsa comes of age, she becomes the queen of Arendelle. Anna gets engaged to Prince Hans, a man she just met, and this causes Elsa to freeze Arendelle and run away. Anna goes after her, meeting Kristoff, Sven, and Olaf along the way. When she finds Elsa, Elsa strikes Anna in the heart with ice. The only way to fix a frozen heart is an act of true love.

Frozen features all of the original songs by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, as well as new ones, such as, “What Do You Know About Love?” sung by Kristoff (Jelani Alladin) and Anna (Patti Murin).

There are a few differences in the musical. There are no longer trolls, and instead they were replaced with the “hidden folk.” The hidden folk and trolls serve the same purpose, and both sing the song “Fixer Upper.” Another notable difference is that the musical adds more drama. Elsa (Caissie Levy) sings the song “Monster.” This song allows Elsa to express her thoughts about being misunderstood and gives her more depth and emotion than the movie.

Frozen is a musical for people of all ages. Whether it be the goofy characters, like Olaf, the love story between Anna and Kristoff, the drama, or the mature humor, there is something almost everyone will enjoy.
