I Am Not Okay With This: Eye-Opening Symbolism
“I Am Not Okay With This” is a Netflix original dark comedy-drama series, that follows a seventeen-year-old girl, Sydney Novak, who is navigating through high school and the recent loss of her father to suicide. Not to mention, newfound and uncontrollable telekinetic powers.
This show also tackles the struggles of LGBTQ youth and depression. In fact, her powers are written as a reference to how difficult the emotions of grief and mental illness can be. Many viewers identified with her sarcastic and introverted nature, as well as her sexuality. One of her main issues in the show is grasping her feelings for a friend, which many people across the world can relate to.
The most important element of this show and what it teaches is that it is okay to ask for help. Sydney has a tough time doing this due to her overall closed-off attitude and so do people throughout the world every day. It also teaches us how shutting down your feelings is not the correct way to go, especially with the ending. This show is not for the faint of heart nor is it for everyone. Although I do believe, once you get the chance that you should give it one.
This series is rated TV-MA for gore, language, depression, mentions of suicide, and unhealthy relationships. The show came out Feb. 26, 2020. The soundtrack was composed by Graham Coxon who worked on the director’s previous show. Shows that are similar: Stranger Things, The Umbrella Academy, Locke and Key, Love Victor, and Atypical.
