How Minecraft’s Music Expresses Emotion

In the beginning of a song, Ambience is a key component in music that creates an extraordinary experience for the listener. Minecraft is a great example of this idea. Who knew a basic game where you build structures and survive through the night has a soundtrack that makes you feel so many emotions in so little time. Minecraft Volume Alpha is an album composed by C418 who is responsible for all of Minecraft’s early music and some of the most nostalgic songs ever written. Being just under an hour long, Volume Alpha submits a festival of emotions all bottled into one from happiness to sadness and from intrigue to relaxing melodies that you could sleep too.

Just 10 seconds in you get Key, a simple yet melancholic song just 1 minute long but sets the mood for the rest of the album to proceed. Track 3, Subwoofer Lullaby is a song that many people don’t know the name of but they would know the first couple seconds of the song just by hearing it. An outstanding song alone. The first song you could imagine to be called a “Happy Song”, would be Moog City. This song sounds like what inspiration would sound like, Countless hours of creativity were spent just with this song alone as it is one of the only pieces that plays exclusively in creative mode, where the only limit is your imagination.

One of the most recognizable songs on this album is Wet Hands. A simple song that uses a piano alone to convey the melody. it sounds melancholic yet in a way a strive for something bigger, a song that can send a meaning like that in only a minute is truly spectacular. But if there is one song that could be seen as the best both emotionally and melodically is Sweden. three minutes of pure nostalgia for not just me, but so many others who grew up and still play Minecraft. This song is a piece of music that is timeless, a song that can be listened to no matter what situation or what emotion you could be feeling. It is that powerful.

c418 created what I see as a masterpiece not just of music, but of emotion as well. This is what makes Minecraft such a memorable game, The music has made the experience of playing Minecraft weather for the first time or the one hundredth time is one that I and many others will never forget and one that will live on for years to come.
