“After you shoot someone, you just want to jump up and tell somebody,” senior Nick Humphrey said. “It’s like, I love you, but I’m going to kill you.”
Bombs, guns and weapons of mass destruction; piñata’s filled with candy; a little green dinosaur who lays eggs and eats turtles; an Italian plumber who grows taller with each mushroom he eats. All of these different games were created with one purpose; Entertainment.
Gamers Club is not your typical club. Instead of hurling things at other people’s heads or lifting weights after school, the members of Gamers Club play video games. On Monday afternoons in 308W, this group of videogame enthusiasts, including Chris Blake, David Montez, and Nick Humphrey, meet to discuss tournaments, club happenings, and to have a good laugh.
“[Gamers Club] is a place where all the gamers of Randall can get together, have a social life and compete during tournaments,” senior Chris Blake, one of the leaders of the club, said. “It can develop great skills like teamwork and common sense, and it takes as much dedication as say, football.”
Blake said that the club is already making plans to expand their involvement beyond the school walls and out into the community.
“I’m thinking of getting a fundraiser together so that we can rent out a Hollywood 16 theater for a tournament,” Blake said. “If we could get a bunch of other schools to do it, then it would be a good competition. There are people who have a lot of skill and no one knows it.”
Even though membership has not been as high club members had hoped, the team is still trying to find recruits and encourages game enthusiasts to join.
“Whenever we try to sell Gamers Club, people just kind of run away,” senior David Montez said. “We’re normal people too. [If more people joined] it would be all that and a bag of chips.”
Students wanting to be involved in Gamers Club should talk to Aaron Favor in room 308W for more details.
“The club is a lot of fun,” Montez said. “It’s a great way to meet new people and be yourself.”
