POOM! The marble slab crashed to the ground as a stunned, CISD bus driver jolted to a stop. 23 high school students stopped their yelling to gape at the once standing memorial.
Late on Saturday night, Feb. 27, the one-act play students arrived back on the school campus around 12:30 A.M. from their workshop in Stamford. The bus driver, trying to be helpful with the unloading process, tried to back up the truck, filled with props, as close as he could to the auditorium doors. In the process, he knocked over the memorial slab in front of the flagpole.
“[The driver] got right up to the slab and asked if [he had] hit anything,” freshman Matt Allen said. “We told him to go forward [because he was too close to the memorial], but he went in reverse again and knocked it over. Then we heard the slab slam and everybody turned around and gasped. Five people tried to pick it up, five big, buff guys, but it didn’t work at all. It was insane.”
