The battle for a swim team at Randall High has been one of many questions.
Freshman Becca Clearman started competitive swimming in 4th grade. Although she stopped swimming a year and a half ago, she still feels a passion for the sport and believes Randall should have a swim team.
“I swam a lot at my private school,” Clearman said. “It’s something that’s kept me grounded. It’s a sport where I can have a team but I’m also on my own [competitively].”
While a swim team may seem like a good idea, financial responsibilities must also be taken into account. Swimmers would have to pay for the cost of a pool, timing equipment, computers, lane lines, among other equipment. They would also have to be registered with USA Swimming, the national governing swimming organization, which also has a fee, as well as a fee for each swimming meet. But Clearman believes that Randall and swimmers would be willing to take care of those responsibilities.
“HOSA sells chocolate bars [as a fundraiser],” Clearman said. “If people were committed enough, and they wanted to be on the swim team, they would do a fundraiser.”
Principal Steve Williams said Randall has taken surveys considering the possibility of a swim team.
“I like swimming, but I would not want [a swim team] if we did not have a strong number wanting on the team,” Williams said. “If we had a strong response, the budget would support one.”
