Giving Back: Student Council members visit with veterans
Raiders Visit Veterans
Student Council celebrated all veterans at the Amarillo Veterans Affairs Healthcare system on Friday.
Select students from the community service committee and the sponsors spent the day alongside Amarillo Veterans to honor them for their service. Participants talked with veterans, served them lunch and played various games with them. The field trip was a chance for students to have a hands on experience within a community and gain a better understanding of how much veterans have previously gone through or the struggles they continue to have.
The veterans were accompanied by Student Council, Amarillo College Daycare Center attendees, and local country artist and poets. Upon the arrival of the Raiders, Veterans were allowed to play a game of football or darts with students and introduce themselves. This was a time for them to get comfortable with students and tell them a little bit about themselves.
After meeting with the veterans, they were all invited to meet in the dining hall with fellow veterans for a special performance by three local artists. The first performance was a country singer, followed by a poetry reading, and a yodeling performance. The performances lasted through lunchtime where the veterans were treated to a chicken fried steak meal. Volunteers accommodated the veterans with assistance during the meal time, while talking to them about their time in active duty. Student Council then helped workers clean up and thanked them for allowing them to visit.
