The month of September is suicide prevention month. Over the past few years, it has been a rising problem for all ages, especially teens and young adults. Suicide is the second leading cause of death in ages 10-24. This is an issue that needs to not only be addressed, but solved. Here at Randall, resources are available to help students who may be struggling.
Randall has a Hope Squad club whose goal is to spread connection and hope.
“The goal of Hope Squad is to find opportunities to share kindness,” Counselor Sasha Reilly said. “We just like to have good conversations and give students a place to go when they are having a conflict.”
Hope Squad is made up of students who are nominated for the program. This can make students feel more comfortable coming to their peers because they were chosen instead of just volunteering.
“I enjoy helping students if they are ever lost or need help, even if it’s just giving someone random a compliment,” senior Avery Taylor said. “Sometimes a small act like that can make a big difference in someone’s day.
Hope Squad also holds events to spread positivity in the Randall community. This month’s event was to invite students to do sidewalk chalk, which is a fun way to spread love on campus.
“I think that it is important to help build a positive environment for our community, and things like the chalk in the park are a great way to do that!” Taylor said.
