Cross Country team is top in Texas after winning district
The Varsity and Junior Varsity Lady Raider Cross Country team won the district meet , Oct. 21. They will compete again at the Regional meet Nov. 2 in Lubbock. The Lady Raiders are currently ranked 1 in the state, after winning 8 meets in a row.
The Varsity team placed first in the district for the second year back-to-back. Karyss Betze placed 2nd, Erika DeWitt 4th, Samantha Jones 5th, Bernise Altamirano 6th, Adriana Martinez 7th, Briana Hernandez 12th and Danielle Mendoza 17th. Five Lady Raiders placed in the top seven spots.
Seven girls will run in the regional meet in two weeks. They will run at 5:30 in the morning, and again in the afternoon. The girls running at Regionals include freshman Karyss Betzen, junior Erika DeWitt, senior Bernise Altamirano, senior Samantha Jones, freshman Adriana Martinez, sophomore Briana Hernandez and senior Denise Altamirano. Alternates are Senior Danielle Mendoza, and Junior Mel Dewey.
The State meet will be Nov. 9 in Lubbock.
“The ladies have worked hard all year,” Coach James said. “Different people have run on the varsity throughout the year so this accomplishment is truly a team effort. The ladies do not want anybody to ever outwork them.”
