Wrestlers compete for varsity positions
Randall wrestlers competing in the same weight class suited up Thursday to battle for varsity spots. The rules were clear; win and compete in Dumas Saturday on the varsity team or lose and suit up for JV.
More than a handful of matches took place with wrestlers such as freshmen Bailer Thomason and Jayton Bennett, and junior Cole Cameron earning varsity positions.
The wrestlers will compete again this Wednesday afternoon in a scrimmage against Amarillo High and Nov. 26 in Boys Ranch. The Raiders are beginning this season with two weapons, returning state champions Jacob Rubio and Beau Henson. Coach David Quirino said he is excited to see what this year’s team can do.
“We were an extremely young team last year,” Quirino said. “We have matured.”
Quirino said his goals for this year are simple, “improve the technical skills of all wrestlers” and “of course, win state”. Quirino said he is hoping the addition of Guillermo Sanchez to the coaching staff will help the team reach this goal. Sanchez was Randall’s first two time state champion.
