Volleyball Season Comes To An End

The Lady Raider volleyball season came to an end Saturday after a loss to Grapevine in the Regional Finals. 

The Raiders had a statistically impressive year, with a record of 29-14, and the team accumulated a collection gold balls to add to their trophy case.

After finishing district in second place behind Amarillo High, the Raiders railroaded Lubbock Coronado, 3-0, in their first playoff game to claim the Bi-District Championship. Next, they faced El Dorado for Area where the Raiders, once again, finished off their opponent in 3 sets, 25-14, 25-15, 25-14. A few days later, the Raiders took on Abilene Wylie for the Regional Quarter-Finals. The Raiders took an early lead winning set one, 25-11. In set two, Abilene put up a stronger fight but ultimately fell to the Raiders, 25-22, and lost again, 25-17, in set three to hand the Regional Quarter-Finals Championship to Randall. On Nov. 12, competition heated up in the Regional Semi-Finals. Before Randall took the court against th No. 2 ranked Colleyville Heritage, they watched Amarillo High fall to Grapevine in 5 sets to end the Sandies season. As the underdog and the only Texas Panhandle team remaining in 5A competition, the Raiders battled Colleyville for 4 close sets, 23-25, 25-18, 26-24, 25-23, to win the gold ball.  The Raiders needed to win one more game in order to make it to the state tournament. That game came at noon the following day. In a packed Lubbock Coronado gym, the Raiders faced the same Grapevine team that took out Amarillo High. The Raiders won the first set, 25-20, but Grapevine came back in sets 2,3 and 4 (27-25, 25-23,25-20) to end the Raider season.

However, the Raiders didn’t leave the court empty handed. Taylor Irving and Jordyn Gove made the All-Tournament team, and in district, Paris Patterson was Offensive player of the year, Taylor Irving was defensive player of the year, and Jordyn Gove was newcomer of the year. Julia Woolsey, Rylee Miller and Maretta Ramirez were first team all district, and Maci Morrow and Kylee Williams were second team all district, and Zenaida Murillo got honorable mention.
