The Randall High School gymnasium was renamed after basketball coach Leslie Broadhurst on April 22.
“It’s great to see you all gathered here,” Broadhurst said. “I’ve got more friends then I thought I had!”
Broadhurst was the boys basketball head coach at Randall for 36 years and has a total of 701 career wins, including two state tournament appearances.
“You only name a facility when something is so significant and an overall model to us all,” principal Steven Singleton said.
When Broadhurst was asked to speak he swore he’d only take eight minutes, but he talked for 24. Throughout the majority of those 24 minutes he selflessly thanked everyone for getting him to where he was rather than speaking about himself.
“A special thanks to my friend Larry,” Broadhurst said. “You can call him crazy or you can call him nice, but he is the one who hired me to coach here at Randall High School.”
Prior to Randall he worked at Borger and his team won 19 games with his first year of working there. Broadhurst shared a story about how he would drive over to the school to watch it being built and would imagine a future working here when the building was finished in 1988.
Many people came to watch the revealing of the ‘new gym,’ including Broadhurst’s family and some former players.
“We love you Coach,” 2006 graduate Nathan Maxwell said. “Growing up with you as a father figure and with your family helped us grow as a team.”
At the end of the assembly Broadhurst and his family were able to finally reveal the new gym modifications. Now the House of Doom will forever have Leslie Broadhurst’s signature on the court where he made a lasting impact.
