The lights pulse, a drumbeat throbs, and the stage explodes with energy as Randall presents the first show of the season “Airness.” This isn’t your typical school play; it’s a full-on rock concert where the instruments are invisible, and the passion is anything but.
The story set in the ‘80s follows Nina, played by Carmen Guajardo, a newbie who stumbles upon the wild world of competitive air guitar, as she navigates the scene and discovers the true meaning of “airness.” Along the way, she encounters a cast of characters played by Durand Carson, Wesley Willburn, Jarett McDowell, Addison Sandifer and Kaitlyn O’Donnell.
Theater director Cy Scroggins said this play showed a different side of acting for the cast members because he feels they put on a lot of serious shows, and he loved how they could just be silly and goofy.
“I first saw Airness at a theater camp during the summer with Durand and Daxon,” Scroggins said. “I thought it was so fun and felt like we had to do it this year.”
“Airness” is about more than shredding invisible guitars. It’s a heartwarming story about friendship, finding your passion, and the power of music to bring people together.
“My favorite part of Airness was growing closer to my castmates,” Guajardo said. “They are all so talented and watching them work and grow was amazing.”
The cast encouraged everyone to come dressed in their best ‘80s gear, but the real showstopper was when a surprise deluge of water was thrown upon the front rows.
“Airness is a very fun interactive show so I think people enjoyed it,” Guajardo said. “Although Airness is a goofy show, there are also good messages to it. It preaches loyalty, hard work, and appreciation for friends.”
The theater kids had their opening night for “Airness” on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the black box theater. They also performed the following Friday and Saturday at the same time and Sunday at 2 p.m.; tickets were sold on Ticket Leap for $5 for students.
