Traditional Halloween costumes deemed ‘derogatory’
This morning as I was getting ready to leave, my dad was watching the national news. A story that caught my ear as I was passing through the living room stopped me in my tracks. The anchors of a morning talk show were making ridiculous claims that certain traditional Halloween costumes are not politically correct.
My jaw dropped. The sole purpose of Halloween is to have fun and dress up, and our world is telling us that we’re wrong for doing so.
These so-called ‘inappropriate’ costumes blew my mind. Among them were classic disguises such as cowboys, Indians, Arabs, Mexicans, all of which are not worn to be offensive in a racially degrading way.
There are bigger fish to fry here. If the news wants to bash costumes, why don’t they attack the ones that choose to dress as pads, tampons, condoms, or reproductive organs, instead of those who are just going out dressed as culturally and historically significant figures.
