Yahoo needs journalism asssistance

I was browsing Yahoo.com this morning, as I normally do to keep up with the world and national headlines, but something aggravating kept getting in my way. It literally would not leave, no matter what page I clicked. It’s a thing called pop culture. That’s right, folks, pop culture and useless celebrity lives. At some points I’m as into celeb ideas as much as anyone, but when I’m looking for news I’d much rather read the story about a bomb blowing up a building in Afghanistan than about how to make your eyebrows perfect or where Kanye and Kim are having their wedding. In all honesty, Yahoo has been run over by insignificant details and they let the important news slide to be distantly archived somewhere on the site. It’s immensely frustrating as there are so many critical things going on in our society and half the world has no idea because they get distracted by ads such as “Fear kept Miley with fiance” and “Jessica Simpson goes makeup free for date night.” We talk about raising standards and fighting to educate the citizenship, but how can we when reporting has been bought out by Miley Cyrus’ tongue and Kim Kardashian’s body? It’s time that we decided as journalists what is really important and what is fluff. Somebody has to say it.
