Volunteering at a bocce ball tournament
On Saturday September 17, I volunteered at the Special Olympics Bocce Ball tournament with the Randall Key Club. Before this event, I had never heard of bocce ball. I learned that bocce ball is a sport played with eight large balls and one small white ball called a pallina ball. Each team was given four balls. One team got Yellow and the other team got blue. There was a coin toss to determine which team would go first. The winner of the coin toss would then toss the pallina ball into the court and then roll one of their team’s balls to try and get as close to the pallina ball as they could. The other team rolled and this continued until all eight balls had been rolled. The game was over when one team scored a certain amount of points.
I was placed at one of the Bocce Ball courts with two other Key Club members. We were supposed to keep score and set up the game. At first we were all very confused, but after the first game, we started to understand the rules and we realized the game is actually very simple.
I got to meet most of the athletes and all of them were really friendly. They were positive, supportive of their teammates even if their teammate didn’t do very well and they had great sportsmanship.
I had a great time helping with this event. If I ever get another opportunity to help with something like this, I definitely will.
My names is Paige James. I am a senior, and I am involved in theatre and Key Club. I joined the newspaper staff because I enjoy writing.
