Flying High

Some people like soccer. Others are good at tennis or golf or football. I tried many sports as a kid, but none of them really worked out for me, so I didn’t try any sort of physical activity until recently. I stumbled on a Facebook ad for an aerial silks studio in Amarillo. It intrigued me, so I went on their webpage to find out more and ended up signing up for one of their classes.

You may be wondering “What in the world is ‘aerial silks?’” Allow me to explain. Aerial silks is a type of performance which involves a person suspended from fabrics called “silks”, which are basically thick ribbons which are typically hung from high ceilings. Flying Fitness and Aerial Arts Studio is the only place in Amarillo that offers classes in aerial silks, and they welcome all levels of experience. In addition, they also offer other workout classes that help get you in shape.

Although it might look easy, aerial silks requires flexibility, strength, and stamina. I went into my first class not quite knowing what to expect, but by the end of the class I was aching and nauseous and vowed to never work out again. Luckily, I changed my mind and have been going ever since. Going up on the silks is quite addicting and you feel a sense of accomplishment when you learn new positions and improve your technique.

What is so refreshing about aerial silks is that it is so much more interesting than going to a gym. I think a big part of the reason people tend to dislike working out is because doing the same dull workouts week after week is boring and exhausting; however, with aerial silks, you are never bored and are always learning something new. Aerial silks is not only a great workout, but is a blast and after years of trying and failing to work out, I have finally found something that fits me.
