Slower vehicles receive more tickets

We all know that one person who rockets down the road at 90 miles per hour, weaving in and out of traffic uncontrollably. In this situation, the first thing that comes to mind is usually a Corvette or Porsche being driven like this. When most people think of speeding cars, they envision an expensive sports car with a huge engine. But according to a recent study showing the top 20 ticketed cars in the United States, this is not the case.

In fact, several of the cars on the top 20 most ticketed list are 4-cylinder vehicles that have very low horsepower. There is even a hybrid, the Toyota Prius C, which holds a spot at number 20. There are also several family cars, such as the Saturn Aura at number 18, the Infiniti QX56/QX80 at 19, and the Subaru Tribeca at number five. There are some sporty cars on the list like the Pontiac GTO and the Scion FR-S, but they are not as expensive or as fast as most sports cars.

No matter what car it is, with a big engine or not, the driver is the one who breaks the rules. “Cars don’t get tickets, drivers do,” says Des Toups, managing editor of Insurance.com. Usually, older people are the only ones who can afford the more expensive sports cars, and they generally drive much safer than younger drivers. Most of the cars on the top 20 list are the cheap, economic ones that are favored by younger drivers with worse driving habits.

The driver gets the ticket, not the vehicle.
