Government shutdown affects citizens
For the first time in nearly two decades, the government has shut down. The cause was a disagreement between the U.S. congress and President Obama about a health care law. This meant that over 1.8 million workers were not paid for more than two weeks. The U.S. government took the responsibility to pay these individuals when they were hired, therefore it shouldn’t matter what arguements they are having; it shouldn’t interfere with innocent citizens paychecks.
The government has shut down 17 times since 1970 for numerous reasons, so it is not an unusual event. However, it is unnecesary. Especially when U.S. workers, such as the ones from Bell Helicopter and PANTEX, are not being paid when they are already facing the difficult economy. U.S. veterans are also affected by not receiving their education because of the lack of promised funds from the government.
Considering the president is a democrat and the majority of Congress are republicans, it should come as no suprise that the government is having a dispute. However the fact that they are bringing their problems to the citizens and bringing the entire country down is absolutely absurd.
The fact that the government is deciding whether or not to impeach the president just proves the already known fact that the government doesn’t know how to solve its own problems. When our federal government was first created, our founding fathers came up with an ingenious system that required all branches to compromise with each other in order to face the country’s obstacles, but that is not what they are doing. The president and Congress refuse to comply with each other’s opinions and that is why this entire situation came about.
Congressman Reid said he refused to be “bullied” by the president simply who wants his healthcare act, Obamacare, to continue; so both sides have their justified reasonings for their arguement, but the citizens shouldn’t be the ones who are affected most. The government needs to compromise and decide whether or not they agree with Obamacare and they should’ve already done so.
