Is Homework Necessary to Assign?
Is homework really beneficial? I think homework is not necessary because it takes the enjoyment out of school, and wastes everyone’s time.
The benefits of homework have been debated by students, parents, and teachers for many years. The first reason that students should not be given homework is that they need time to relax and take their minds off work. The pressure of having to complete homework every night is quite stressful for most students and they need time to refresh their minds and bodies. Too much homework can encourage cheating because students end up copying off one another in an attempt to finish all their assignments. They then end up being rewarded for cheating which doesn’t benefit them at all.
Secondly, there are students that are in sports and have sports practices after school. Some during the season, come home from games after midnight. Homework just puts more pressure and stress on students. Too much homework can lead to copying and cheating. Most of the time, a lot of teachers don’t often have the time to grade papers properly as they are too busy with designing lesson plans and consulting teaching resources in order to just manage lessons. So by the time students are getting their papers back, the class has moved on to a new topic.
Thirdly, homework can affect students both physically and mentally. According to a study by Stanford University, 56 percent of students considered homework a primary source of stress. Homework over a certain time limit can cause stress, depression, anxiety, and more. Too much homework can result in a lack of sleep, headaches, exhaustion, and weight loss. Homework can cause conflict between students and parents when the parent wants the child to do their homework but meets resistance from the student to do an overwhelming task.
In conclusion, homework has been a controversial topic for many years. I believe that homework is unbeneficial.
