AI has been an issue in the film industry for many years, and with how fast technology is growing, it’s only becoming more of an issue. Earlier last year the actors went on strike and half of their reasoning was because of the use of AI in film. They claim it’s taking many jobs away from aspiring actors and artists. In the eyes of corporations, it’s much faster and cheaper to type a prompt into an A.I. program like ChatGPT, which is free, rather than having to pay an artist.
One movie this year that used A.I. was “Late Night With The Devil.” The movie is about a late-night talk show host who brings on a girl who is possessed by the devil, and when the movie cuts to black, they show a photo that says “We’ll be right back.” Viewers noticed something off about the picture and went online to ask the director of the movie. He then confirmed that he did use AI to generate that image, but in his defense, he said that they paid some artists to tweak the image. Overall the movie was really good, but the use of AI put a sour taste in fans’ mouths.
Another example is the new movie “Alien Romulus.” The movie itself was phenomenal, although it found itself in some controversy after one character from the Alien universe was brought back from the dead, even though the actor playing the character is no longer alive. Ian Holm made his way into the alien movies back in the original Alien in 1979. He sadly passed away in 2020 and in the new Alien Romulus, they bring him back to reprise his role all due to the use of AI. In my opinion, this is not okay. Not only does it look terrible in the film it’s extremely disrespectful to the actor and his family and is in bad taste.
I think the use of AI in film can be harmful it can also be helpful if used right. It’s still a new concept in the film industry and it’s going to take time to get used to.
