After the district budget cuts, the Canyon ISD administrators came together and created a 9-period schedule for the 2026-2027 school year. This new schedule will give students more class periods, which would allow the school to have fewer staff members.
The Canyon ISD administrators shouldn’t have created the 9-period schedule.
In general, students already have a lot to stress about with the current number of classes that they have. They have to submit assignments for seven classes, and most get burnt out by the halfway point of the first semester. Adding another class period will increase the stress on students and burn them out even faster. The upcoming senior classes will struggle with the extra class more than the lowerclassmen due to dealing with graduation requirements. Senior slump is already a huge issue seniors deal with, even with 8 periods, but adding another will cause senior slump to be more common. Seniors will be more drained out by graduation, especially if the extra class isn’t a senior permit.
The current schedule has a late start at the start of every week, which will be cut in the new one. Flex as we know it now will be moved to be 30 minutes at the beginning of every day. Cutting these times out of the day will cause more stress on students and teachers. Teachers use flex time to help students catch up on late work, failing grades, or test corrections, but now they have to go in before school to make that stuff up. It’s already hard enough to get students to school early, but next year, without a late start, it will be even worse.
Although the extra class gives people an extra elective, giving them more opportunities in school, the classes will be cut short by 5 minutes, which would be a struggle for both teachers and students. Teachers already don’t have time to teach the lesson of the day, and cutting the class shorter might not allow the teacher to reach all the points in the topic. Test scores and learning could be affected because of this.
In conclusion, the Canyon ISD administrators shouldn’t have created the 9-period schedule because it would cause too many problems for the students’ education and the quality of the lessons from the teachers.
