Food collected during Dec. 1-11 food drive will be donated to the High Plains Food Bank.

The Student Leadership class will host a canned food drive Dec. 1-11. The goal is to collect 5000 pounds of food for the High Plains Food Bank. If the Randall community can reach this goal, students and teachers will then have the option to pay $3 to enjoy an extended lunch set for Dec. 15.

To earn extended lunch two criteria must be met:

-The campus must collect 5000 pounds of food

-The person who wishes to enjoy extended lunch must pay $3

In addition to receiving the canned food from this drive, half of the money that is collected will be donated to the High Plains Food Drive. The other half of the money will be donated to the Education Foundation. The top three second period classes in the west building and the top three second period classes in the east building (pounds collected per person in the class) will receive a donut party, and the overall winner in each building will also receive a pizza party.

The High Plains Food Bank is the clearinghouse and distribution center for about 185 feeding partners, all of which are non-profit (501C3) organizations including emergency food pantries, shelters, recovery centers, & other non-profits. Their network of feeding partners spans the 29-county service area to serve people facing food insecurity in their communities.

What food you CAN donate to a food bank:

Food banks accept dry and canned food donations. What does that mean? Basically, any food that is “shelf-stable” or nonperishable – you can keep it in your pantry and it won’t go bad. And remember, only donate food that hasn’t reached its “sell-by” date yet.

What food you can NOT donate to a food bank:

Food banks do not accept perishable items. Perishable items are foods that have a limited shelf life if not refrigerated. But there are other categories of food that you can’t donate:

  • Items needing refrigeration
  • Expired food
  • Leftovers
  • Food with packaging concerns
  • Baked goods
