Wrestling Team Looks for First 3-Peat State Title in 5A History

The wrestling team will take the mat April 23 in Houston with one goal in mind, to earn the first 3-peat state title in 5A history. This is something that only 6A’s Allen has been able to do.

“We have had two other opportunities to earn a 3-peat state title, but we’ve never got the job done,” Assistant Coach Mark Fortner said.

It is something our team is ready for. Six of the 10 (boys competing) have been to the state meet before and have placed so our experience and maturity will help.

— Head Coach David Quirino

Going into the state meet, the Raiders have recovered from last week’s Region 1 tournament in El Paso where the boys’ team finished as Regional Champs and earned 255 points, 74 points over the second place Dumas Demons. The boys’ team qualified 10 wrestlers for state, while the girls’ team finished in fourth place with three state qualifiers. Following a strong regional showing, Head Coach David Quirino said the Raider team is ready to take on the competition at state.

“The opportunity is really good,” Quirino said. “It is something our team is ready for. Six of the 10 (boys competing) have been to the state meet before and have placed so our experience and maturity will help. Experience is key and with that many returning wrestlers competing, it is now about taking hold of the steering wheel and getting there.”

The state meet will be streamed live on NFHS Network. The webcast will begin at 9 a.m. Central Time, each mat will have an individual video stream.
