The first snow of the year dropped anywhere from 4 to 12 inches of snow throughout areas of the Texas Panhandle. The city of Amarillo reported an estimated 4.5 to 5 inches of snow inside the city limits. The storm began Friday evening and continued into Sunday morning.

Once the sun went down a short trip from one street to the next grew extremely dangerous. During the snow, the ground was still warm so the snow melted when it hit the ground. When the sun went down, the water immediately froze, turning roads into pure sheets of ice.

According to the department of public safety, the winter storm caused 148 accidents in the Panhandle. The hazardous road conditions contributed to four fatal wrecks.

Most of the snow and ice has melted by now, but DPS is still warning of drivers to slow their speed and keep an eye out for ice patches and black ice.
