Technology, social media have negative impact
Over the years, technology can be seen everywhere. From Chromebooks used in the classroom to the online databases used in the libraries, the gradual increase of technology everywhere causes an increase of the amount of social media used daily.
Too much use of social media can have negative effects on one’s life.
Spending too much time on social media can lead to cyber bullying. People believe it is easier to get away with bullying online rather than face to face. Due to cyber bullying, those who can use social media can experience thoughts of suicide, and can take away happiness from students.
Refraining from spending too much time on social media is important because it heightens the need to “compare and despair”. This need becomes more apparent when using social media. An example of this would be when one is looking at someone else’s Instagram page. Since social media only highlights the good, happy aspects of a person’s life, one can only see happy, smiling pictures. This, by default, can cause jealousy. This jealousy can multiply when using social media, which can impact lives negatively.
With increased use in social media also comes increase in the possibility of sexual harassment. There are no face to face meetings on social media, so many are able to hide behind a computer screen. Even when there is a planned face to face meeting, there are no guarantees that it is the person exemplified on the social media outlet.
Although those in favor of social media may argue that it has its benefits, that is not always the case. Social media can promote online sexual harassment, put into effect the need to “compare and despair”, and can lead to cyber bullying. Even if social media can be beneficial, the bad would outweigh the good.
To stop people from overusing social media, it is suggested that turning off phones and finding a different activity to replace it with can be beneficial. Social media can be fun at first, but after some time, it can take over your life and can impact your life negatively.

Hi Dayton
Counter Argument: Even though Social media could lead to feeling alone and things such as “Sexual Harassment” it really does have it’s upside.
My Argument: I do believe a lot of the negatives could be avoided such as simply disabling comments blocking people or just not using social media, since it’s not something that’s required. Some of the good things are that it can help you stay connected with friends and family in far places.

Although I do agree with some aspects that are mentioned, I disagree that social media has a negative impact. How social media is used is completely up to the person using it, so they can decide whether or not they want to use it as a positive or negative impact on their life. People say that the people you are exposed to have a role in how you behave and your perspective on things. So if you follow good influencers on social media, chances are you will become a better person just by seeing and watching the way they go about life.
Even though there are bad people and creeps on social media, people just need to be self-aware. If they decide to do something stupid, that’s on them and they have to pay the consequences because social media really does have a positive impact, and it is an amazing tool to have with us in this day and age.
