New year, new you, new struggles

January 1, we look back on the previous year, reminiscing on the memories and how it has shaped us. It is a natural time to want to become a better person, friend, athlete, student etc. Setting resolutions is a natural and healthy thing to do, but by February, many people find themselves in the same place they were the year before.

Here are some things to remember while on your journey to a better you.

Ditch “resolutions.” Try setting small goals first. When I think of the word “resolution,” I think January. Everyone is quick to let you know what their plans are for the year and how they are going to stick with it and stay motivated, but to be honest, I’ve yet to meet anyone who has ever stuck with their plan all year long. If you set small goals, you will accomplish more, which will build your confidence to continue on the path to success.

Make a plan. Benjamin Franklin once said, “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.” Without a plan, you’re more likely to forget your goal altogether and go back to doing the things that will not get you to where you want to be.

Motivation will not always be there to keep you going, don’t make excuses. Whether it is eating healthier or studying more, there will be days where you do not want to stick with your plan. Find a way to overcome the laziness and rebellion and do it anyway. You will feel accomplished and it will build you up against future obstacles.

Don’t give up. If you skip a day at the gym, make a bad grade, or get in a fight with a friend, step back and remember you are human. Allow yourself to make mistakes, but always find a way to build yourself back up. Doing what you set out to do, and proving others wrong is always a fulfilling and rewarding experience and will make you a better person in the long run.
