The Jetsons, a television show made in 1962, tells the tale of a futuristic family. The show contained flying cars and robot servants and was based off of what people of the 60s thought present day would be like. Although the devices the show foretold only exist in peoples’ imagination today’s devices are beyond what anyone could’ve imagined. Roland Lian Cung Bawi, the 14 month old son of two Burmese immigrants was born with heart defects that if untreated would result in an unhealthy life. Surgeon Erle Austin stepped in to help Bawi. Using a 3D printer Austin managed to create a 3D model of the boys heart, defects and all, to reduce the time it took to preform on the tiny, fragile heart. The help of the 3D printer helped save the boys life and that is something that although not often thought about makes a much bigger and much more positive difference in todays society.
