Students begin mock yearbook projects

Yearbook students have begun working on mock yearbooks for the next school year. The purpose of the mock yearbook is to gather ideas for the yearbook creation process so that one design can be chosen for next year’s book.

“It’s a good way to prepare for some aspects of working in the real world, like with brainstorming, meeting deadlines and doing presentations,” junior Dillon Garner said.

The mock yearbook project begins after the yearbook for the current year has been finished. The mock yearbook project follows most normal yearbook procedures.

“First, the group has to decide on the theme and concept of the yearbook, along with whatever design elements would be present throughout,” junior Dillon Garner said. “Then we have to execute mock designs of things like the cover and inside pages, all of which should follow the concept.”

After the students have finished their mock yearbooks, they present them to the rest of the yearbook staff.

“Eventually the group will present their project on a SmartBoard along with the other yearbook students,” junior Dillon Garner said. “One design will be singled out as the 2013 yearbook.”

Despite the students experience with yearbook templates and processes, the mock yearbook still presents some challenges.

“The hardest part would be coming up with new topics for the Student Life section,” Garner said. “Everything our group thinks of has been done before, so it’s quite hard to add completely fresh ideas for the subject.”

Garner said the easiest part of the project was deciding on colors, since his group knew early on that they would simply utilize the school colors.

“I mostly enjoy the fact that we all have free reign to come up with whatever we want,” Garner said. “It’s a very liberating feeling. For our group, we decided to revert to an 80s theme since it will be the school’s 25th anniversary, so it will be fun to see the creative sparks fly in trying to catch the spirit of that era in our designs.”
